Winter Storm Fire Safety:

As the winter months approach, so does the potential for severe
weather and storms. These storms can cause power failures and
you are reminded of the following fire safety tips:

Smoke alarms are essential for your family's safety. Smoke alarms
that are electrically connected to your home's power supply will not
work when the electricity is off, unless they have a battery back-up.
If your smoke alarms do not have a battery back-up, consider
installing battery operated smoke alarms on every storey of your
home in addition to the electrical units
Cordless phones will not work in a power failure. Have at least one
telephone (not cordless) so that you can call authorities in the event
of an emergency
Make sure that electric stove elements, ovens, kettles, frying pans,
irons, hair dryers etc. are off or unplugged to prevent a fire from
starting when the electricity is restored
Use flashlights or chemical light sticks instead of candles or lanterns
to reduce the risk of fire
Portable generators should be used outdoors only. They should be
located so that exhaust fumes do not enter the building. Store fuel
for the generator in an approved container and away from the
building and generator. Refuel the generator only after shutting it
down and letting it cool
